This beautiful Brown Jug may be one of the last amps built by David Allen before selling his company. The owner got his order in just before David stopped taking orders. The Brown Jug is essentially a Fender 6G11A Vibrolux, which happens to be one of my favorite circuits, and it is a stunning example. The build quality is excellent, and the amp sounds like a dream. It is everything you could ask for from a pair of 5881 tubes and a 12 inch speaker.
So… if it is so great, why is it in my shop for repair? The owner decided that it’s a bit more power and headroom than he expected, and he wants to try it with 6V6. Simple! A new pair of tubes and a bias adjust later, and it’s ready to go. Even I am surprised at how good it sounds running the 6V6 pair.
Allen Amps is now under new ownership, but they say they are committed to continuing the quality workmanship for which Allen is well known. At the moment, there doesn’t appear to be any change to the products being offered. As long as they keep making amps up to this standard, they are going to be just fine!
